About Sam’s Fans

Sam’s Fans was founded in memory of Samantha Jane McCarthy, a bright and joyful girl who was diagnosed at age six with Fanconi Anemia, a rare genetic blood disorder leading to bone marrow failure. Despite this serious illness, Sam embraced life with courage, filling her days with friends, sports, and activities that any young girl would enjoy. Through it all, Sam’s unwavering spirit and determination stood strong, even as she prepared for a bone marrow transplant at age 10.

For the next 14 months, Sam displayed remarkable resilience, facing each challenge with grace and positivity. On October 15, 2009, after a brave fight, Sam passed away, leaving behind a legacy of strength and hope. The loss was unimaginably difficult for her parents, Nikki and Dan McCarthy, and their three young sons. But in the midst of grief, they knew that giving up was not the way to honor Sam’s memory or the incredible fight she had shown.

Inspired by Sam’s joy in Music and Art Therapy during her time in the hospital, Nikki and Dan founded Sam’s Fans in 2015 to help other children find healing through creative expression. For Sam, Music and Art were a lifeline. They brought her comfort during her toughest moments, giving her a voice and allowing her to escape the confines of illness through creativity. One of the most cherished memories Nikki holds is a recording of Sam singing one of her favorite songs, a lasting reminder of the joy and peace that Music brought to her.

Today, Sam’s Fans brings the transformative power of Music and Art Therapy to seriously ill children and their families across Ohio and Southwest Florida. Through our programs, countless hours of therapeutic support have been provided, helping young patients find hope, comfort, and joy, just as Sam did. These therapies don't just heal the soul—they offer a sense of relief and connection for entire families facing the unimaginable.

At Sam’s Fans, we believe that when children feel better, they heal better. By providing access to Music and Art Therapy, we help children and their families cope, recover, and experience moments of joy during their most challenging times. Join us in supporting this vital mission, and together, let’s create hope, one song and one sketch at a time.
